10/29, Baseball World Scores, Series wrap-ups

Major League Baseball-World Series

San Francisco Giants 3-2 Kansas City Royals

And the San Francisco Giants are your MLB World Series Champions! This was such a close one and came down the last at bat. One slight difference in the game could have taken it the other way. Congratulations to both teams, you more than proved your worth to be in the series despite both coming off of Wild Card berths!

Nippon Professional Baseball-Nippon Series

SoftBank Hawks 5-2 Hanshin Tigers

Due to my late posting of the scores today, I will go ahead and include the game for 10/30.

SoftBank Hawks 1-0 Hanshin Tigers

The Hawks win the Nippon Series 4-1 on a very controversial last call out of runner interference. This is one to look up something on, it's bizarre and it's exactly the sort of reason why the MLB bringing in instant replay has been a positive thing in my opinion.

CONCACAF Champions League

Leon 4-1 Metapan
Saprissa 2-0 Sporting Kansas City

With the second result here, I'd like to make an observation. The US and Costa Rica both have a set number of seeds granted to the tournament, 4 and 2, respectively. Canada has only 1 btw, and it will be advancing. However, the US only has one team that will move forward into the quarter-finals. Costa Rica will have 3, given that a 3rd Costa Rican team was granted admission when Belize was unable to provide an adequate stadium of play to CONCACAF. That's just kind of ridiculous. I don't think that the MLS teams that were eligible are worse than many of the teams they played. Quite the contrary. I just think the MLS teams, or at least perhaps their front office or management, didn't take the competition serious enough. It works both ways guys. If you don't put forth the effort, why should a viewing audience? I mean, already it's only regulated to web only/soccer specialty channel viewing. People will watch UEFA Champions League OVER league play, but what about our own Champions? What about Costa Ricas, or Mexico? Are they any less interesting? I should think not. If anything, there's been some great games played in this tournament that no one watched. Make them WANT to watch people. Show up.

So where do we stand?

Want to be able to give a good idea of what I'm throwing up here every week. Here's a look at the standings for each league we're following right now, as of 10/19/2014.

We'll take these on one by one, depending on their start time.
Which begins with the Argentinian league, in their second half, going on since August 3rd. While yes, Argentina has a remarkably long season, they also don't play that often compared to how we normally think of it. The information on the functioning of the league is kind of sparse, so I take what I can get.

Liga Metropolitana de Beisbol

The Cuban National Series began on September 21st. First of the Caribbean leagues to get started, but they'll be playing long after the others end.

Cuban National Series

The Arizona Fall League and the Venezualan Winter League started around the same time, followed shortly after by the Mexican Pacific League. These are our big MLB backed leagues, and we've got 2 more (Australian and Puerto Rican) to get started, as well as 3 to 4 (depending on Panama) leagues that aren't MLB affiliated, but will get started in the next two months.

Arizona Fall League

Liga Venezolana Beisbol Profesional

Mexican Pacific League

Liga de Dominicana Profesional

As far as the other leagues are concerned, Panama often doesn't get rolling til January, so it's uncertain as to the league's current status for this year. There's also one more Mexican league (specifically in the state of Veracruz) that will begin along with Nicaragua and Colombia's yearly leagues.

10/19 Baseball Scores From all the Places, plus some scores from some other sparts too, I guess.

We have football scores, lots of 'em! All different kinds. One of which is a new on for me, introducing.... SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY!

English League Championship

Sheffield Wednesday 0-3 Watford

No one's get promoted here anytime soon. I feel for this little second tier team, which I honestly didn't know existed until I heard a bit about them on the Men in Blazers TV show. I love me an underdog, and they're not even close to that, it's been doing that poorly for them. Heads up, still a long season to go!

Speaking of a long season so far, back into the Barclay's

Barclay's Premier League

Everton 3-0 Aston Villa

Oh what a beautiful win. It feels like it's all back together an honestly, one could point to Barkley's return as exactly what was needed, the key piece. And just because the first one was so good, Jags scored another goal. Just so that announcers the worlds over could yell JAGS in their microphone once again. Good going men, nice clean sheet at that.

My promise of covering my thoughts on college football, and celebrating mini-tournaments

Every weekend college gameday rolls around. I look at what times the two teams I follow will play at and file it away. And then I go about my day as normal. Depending on the time, I'll look it up later and see how they're doing or did. And that's it.

I can respect football as a sport. I still struggle in respecting many of the players for various reasons that I still have problems with Major League Baseball as well. But football I always approach at a distance, I've just never been THAT interested, and college football even moreso. This is all while growing up in Mississippi, a state entrenched in college football rivalry between MSU and Ole Miss. Part of it is my parents never watched football, so that opportunity wasn't there. Eventually I did have friends who watched football, but even being at every football game in band, and having days off and free tickets to the see the game of my college team, Southern Miss, I never went. I did, however, take some tailgater's tray of chicken fingers. I'm sorry.

Anyway, I still approach it with nonchalance, but I actually follow Southern Miss more now than I did then. At first it was just to see if we'd win a game last year, when we were doing so bad. I'd like them to do well, but I recognize that as an uphill battle. So one game at a time guys. Living in Austin, TX, it's hard not to be a supporter of UT, and they've fallen a bit at the start of this year to the point that both them and USM have the same record of 2-4. I feel like some type of balance set in. But in the end, I'm still not that concerned. I'll check in, great. If not, eh, it happens. I mean, I like it better than basketball. But not more than hockey, or lacrosse for that matter. But I follow teams in football where I don't in the other two sports. I don't have a good explanation for it, I'm just here as a fan. Not "here as a fan," but "just here."

SHIFTING GEARS

We're in the playoffs! For lots of folks. We started off with the Netherlands getting things going, and have moved into the MLB, the NPB, and the CPBL all running their finals around the same time! It's exciting, but that's how baseball goes, there's a few leagues all running around the same time. You just never noticed before, did you? Tut-tut.

Anyhow, one thing I was very excited about as a follower of the international game is the re-emergency of the Chinese Baseball Association/League in mainland China. In the past two World Baseball Classics, the national team had at least edged out one win, one of which came against fierce rivals and IBAF ranked #4 Chinese Taipei. However, when gathering my top 30 league info a month or so back, I found out the league had folded or put on hold back in 2011. Now, after a few false starts, they seem ready to roll again, in the form of a smaller 4 team tournament. I'm excited.

Neighboring Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) is also in the playoff range, two teams playing each other as they have all year. I think there's a certain admirability to their persistance. They've played a full season, and there's only 4 teams in the whole league. So each team knows so much about each other, there's no way it's not intimate.

There's a little tournament running through Barcelona the next two days, featuring players from teams representing the Catalonia and Navarre regions of Spain, as well as from the North Italian baseball teams, and the Italian All-Stars. It's the 20th annual "City of Barcelona" Tournament, and it's just held over these two days.  Each team played a game on Friday, two games today, and then there'll be the 3rd place and championship games on Sunday. Very quick tournament, and there's a bit of video footage of the games at this website here.

Giants advance to make a return to the World Series, Kansas City awaits! This going to be a very interesting World Series. Kansas City is this crazy return to small ball, which I love, and the Giants, to me, are the continuing progression forward out of the steriod era--hard hitters, hard pitchers, not necessarily home run/strikeout crazy, but just, expanding out of where we stood with that. I'd say it's definitely a Series worth watching.

No soccer to note, though  I did get a chance to watch the game with Caribes and Magallanes. At least of it. It ran 14 innings, apparently, and I left around the 7th to go home from work. So after no runs from innings 10-14, Caribes broke through and whomped 5 on Los Navegantes in the top of the 14th. Magallanes is 2-4 for the year so far, Caribes is doing well at 4-1, though the Zulia Aguiles hold the top spot and are as of yet unbeaten.

But how about KC? I realize that my focus elsewhere has left me lacking. Omar Infante, former Marlins who totally busted his ass for my favorite team when he played for them, so I was happy to see that Kansas would be headed up to the World Series this year, him being part of it, despite him being on board with the team that should have been.

It also occurred to me, that a tragic oversight on my part had been had. These last two games had been in KC, so I missed a great opportunity for when the Royals first played in Baltimore, to inform the Orioles fans, that "Heyo, Omar comin'!" Yes.

AND NOW TO SOCCA. I always keep an eye on what Ireland is doing, they usually don't get terribly far in international play, but they do fight hard, and we'll probably get to see more of them as they continue progress and if they get a chance to play with some of their better players, considering a few are injured right now. The smaller teams are definitely fighting harder than usual, and it looks like Ireland caught Germany by surprise here on this one. For Ireland this is definitely one of those "When a tie is a win situations."

Euro 2016-Qualifiers

Germany 1-1 Republic of Ireland

International Friendly

United States 1-1 Honduras
Canada 0-1 Colombia

Now Hondurus potentially might miss the Gold Cup next year depending on the 5th place matchup with the 5th place in the Caribbean Cup. So this may be the last time the US may play Honduras for a while. One thing that threw me: this is pretty much the A-squad, there's a couple of guys not playing, but otherwise, these are the same guys playing that were here for the World Cup.

But most of these guys play in the MLS, and their teams are leading up to the playoffs! And as a reminder, the MLS does not schedule around the International break. We only need to look at the Houston Dynamo, who had 3 very important games within a 7 day span, already missing a few guys to injuries ALSO lacking Boniak Garcia and Luis Gurrido to...oh, the Honduras team. So yeah, thanks MLS. Don't try to throw this on Hondurus.

I was actually very excited to catch a bit of the Canadian game, though at a bad time as I mostly just saw Colombian players trot on and off the field. Still, it seems Canada put up a great fight, and when you're up against Falcao and James Rodriguez, to only let in one goal? Not bad. So hopefully we'll see a bit more of this Canadian team, which has immense potential, they just need to hone down and they could be a threat for the Gold Cup next year.

A Good Bit of Nonsense-Relegation in the US

So after following the live updates of the Hoofdklasse Play Downs and watching Mampaey The Hawks be relegated to the second division baseball group, I thought about how often this might have happened in the MLB if they employed the same practice. In the MLB, and in most other US leagues, the relegation is non-existent. Lower level teams are considered farm teams, excepting the few Independent leagues in the country.Even in baseball abroad (to my knowledge), the Netherlands is the only country whose baseball leagues still do this, Italy having abandonded it back in 2010.

I'm not the only person who's looked at this, the reason why it doesn't exist in the MLB and the US as well is long entrenched in professional sports, and it's been court approved, at that. But if we look at say, the English Premier League as an example, most of the Second division teams have much affection from their fans, though some of that might be from the idea that their teams are not just fodder of rookies and players struggling or recovering from injury. And in the EPL and other European leagues, there are plenty of farms teams too. The minors (themselves comparitive leagues before they started struggling in the early parts of the last century) are one of the hardest bits to get around on the concept of MLB relegation, and I've come up with some controversial suggests on how to work around that.

So first of all, I think the most important part of making this move is the dissolution of the separate American and National Leagues. Blasphemy, you say! Yes, but if we're already throwing out the non-use of relegation, why not go ahead with knocking the rest of those boundaries down. This is science! We will break things for the science! So no National and American League, no

So that's the first step. The second is, when? So for me I said, let's say we did this at the end of the 2013. So all my numbers from where we started are based off of this. The second thing I said was, let's split them up into two tiers. All of it is still Major League Baseball, but Division I and Division II or perhaps, better names. Couldn't I have done AL/NL? Sure, but I'm sure someone would claim preference on who's on top. So the top 14 of the MLB would be D1, the bottom 16 D2. The playoffs for both would be a 5 team playoff to determine the champion.

But how about we throw a couple of other ringers into this? We've got the Blue Jays in here representating Toronto, but I thought "Why not have at least one representative from both Canada AND Mexico included?" How would we do this? The Mexican League is a AAA recognized but unaffiliated league of Mexican teams. So I thought, hey, let's introduce the top team from this league into the standings. If they become subject to relegation, then they would be replaced by the top team from that year of the Mexican League. I'd like to do the same with a Canadian team, to keep things fair. But there's not really a Canadian league, and aside from one minor league team, most baseball teams in Canada are either semi-pro or independent leagues. So I used those as an example. So the Canadian and Mexican teams would stay in the D1, unless facing relegation and moved back to the Mexican or Canadian league respectively. In the model we're using from 2013, this is the Quintana Roo Tigres, and since the Blue Jays would have been outside of D1 based on their 2013 record, they would be looking at being replaced by the Quebec Capitales, currently of the Can-Am independent league. In actual play I think it would only be fair for the Blue Jays to fight for their right to a continued MLB existence, but for the sake of argument I'm just sending them down.

Now since we've already hit one of the main concerns: how does that affect big market teams like the Blue Jays? Well, for these smaller leagues, it's a boost, suddenly their market is nationally known, or at least made more aware in the area for that team. For the regulated team, never has the inspiration to do better been accentuated. And think of it this way: they've finally got a chance for a championship, if they've been mired in years of no wins.

So continuing on. Here's how the two would break down, alphabetically.

Division 1:
  • Atlanta Braves
  • Boston Red Sox
  • Cincinnati Reds
  • Cleveland Indians
  • Detroit Tigers
  • Kansas City Royals
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Oakland Athletics
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Quebec Capitales
  • Quintana Roo Tigres
  • St. Louis Cardinals
  • Tampa Bay Rays
  • Texas Rangers
  • Washington Nationals
Division II:
  • Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Baltimore Orioles
  • Chicago Cubs
  • Chicago White Sox
  • Colorado Rockies
  • Houston Astros
  • Los Angeles Angels
  • Miami Marlins
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • Minnesota Twins
  • New York Mets
  • New York Yankees
  • Philadelphia Phillies
  • San Diego Padres
  • San Fransisco Giants
  • Seattle Mariners
So following the 2014 year, The bottom two of the D1 go down to the D2 (Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers) and the top 2 from D2 move up (LA Angels and Baltimore Orioles). And finally, the Arizona Diamondbacks would fight for relegation against the AAA champion Omaha Stormchasers. Now one thing that we might see is both the regular and farm team in D2, but like most relegation systems, the AAA team would not be able to advance to D1. I'll be continuing to follow this for the next year, as it amuses me greatly. We'll see how it goes.

Other games I was following were in NCAA football and as per usual, soccer.

University of Texas 26-31 Oklahoma

The local college here in Austin I've been following since we moved, and also began following my own alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, around the same time, despite the fact I really hadn't followed college sports ever, including when I was actually in college. Game days for me were a time to do things in town where it was normally slightly more crowded, and thereby less crowded on game day. It's been a rough year for both teams, but it's early on, there's time yet.

In the world of soccer, we had another round of the Euro 16 qualifiers. Of interest today:

Republic of Ireland 7-0 Gibralter

I've been fascinated with the story of Gibralter entering into FIFA and making plays in the Euro and the Europa League, neither with much success, but still. Of course, I'm not going to argue with the eventuality of Ireland advancing either. I'm good on that.

MLS side, the games of interest are of course, those that effect the Houston Dynamo for me.

Montreal Impact 2-2 New England Revolution
NY Red Bulls 3-1 Toronto FC
Philadelphia Union 2-3 Columbus Crew

I guess I should emphasize, the Crew and the Red Bulls are both difficult teams, and so if the Dynamo aren't able to climb back on points to get past them, there's a damn good reason. However, this works out well enough (draw on Red Bulls-Toronto would have been better, but eh), as the points gained or not gained from Philly and Toronto will help with tomorrow's rather difficult game for the Dynamo against DC United.

The Tragedy of Relegation and Other Saturday Tales

There's a couple of playoffs going on, each runs a little different and I want to go over that before getting into my main point for the day. I originally was going to have something up today about football, perhaps that's just best left for tomorrow. Most of you are familiar with the MLB playoff currently underway. It's changed alot in just 20 years, what with the introduction of the Wild Card and now the Wild Card Playoff, as well as the additional division in each league. So let's look at the other two playoffs going on right now, the wrapping of the Honkbal Hoofdklasse (to delineate from the football division of the same name in the Netherlands), and the beginning of the NPB's Climax Series.

I'll get into the Climax series first. A while back, the NPB decided to lengthen the playoffs a bit instead of just the highest ranked of the Central versus the Pacific League. So the second and third place of each league have a 3-game series before facing off against the 1st in the league in the road to the final series.

It's fairly simple compared to the Hoofdklasse. The season is split into a first and second half. The second half starts off at zero so that there can be two separate winners for the first and second half, which the winners of both face off in the Holland Series game of 7. The L&D Amsterdam Pirates are longtime rivals of DOOR Neptunus, both having won the Holland Series multiple times. One part that is unique to the Hoofdklasse is relegation. The Play Down series of 5 runs at the same time as the Holland Series.

In the Play Downs, the last place team of the Hoofdklasse plays the top team of the Honkbal Overgangsklasse, the second division. This year it was Mampaey The Hawks against DSS, representing their respective leagues. I've been rather fascinated, DSS battling for glory and advancement, The Hawks merely to stay alive, to avoid relegation to the lower league. As the game today took place and DSS's version of small ball overcame Mampaey, a sort of sadness occured to me, the tragedy of the fact that this team, despite their efforts in the same game to advance 2 years ago, wold be forced back down. Two years ago, the relegated team declared bankruptcy and folded, hopefully a unique and one time. Certainly DSS has more to prove in the next year but they are an exciting team to watch. The whole thing has me thinking about how the process could potentially work in the MLB. I'll have more on that another time.

Welcome to the Hoofdklasse, DSS. Hope you survive the experience.

Soccer wise, USA tied Ecuador in their friendly matchup, as did Saudi Arabia and Uruguay (featuring a performance by the reforming Luis Suarez).

The Euro competitions were interesting, the one I was most curious about was Wales-Bosnia-Herzegovia, as an Everton follower keeping an eye on Muhamed Besic. The game ended nil-nil, and I never was able to find a video feed on it. However, the ones that really had me on the edge for a bit was Netherlands-Kazakhstan and Italy-Azjerbaijan. In both games, down to about the 80th minute were tied-up. Normally I would have expected something to the degree of the Belgium-Andorra game, where Andorra only pulled off two shots on goal the whole game, to the mess of shots and 6 goals that Belgium scored. Now, Netherlands and Italy both pulled ahead, but it's worth noting how close it got.

MLS side, the Vancouver Whitecaps pulled off a nice 1-0 victory over Seattle to pull into the playoff picture, hopping over the Portland Timbers who we had talked about the last time. Sporting KC kept afloat at 2nd with a win over the Chicago Fire, keeping them back down towards the bottom and wallowing with the Montreal Impact. The next two days have alot of very important games, namely on Sunday both Texas teams (FC Dallas is already in the playoff range) will play the top of their divisions. The point spread on the teams under the top two is very close, so most of these spots towards the bottom of the playoff range will be up for grabs.

Tomorrow will be a big day for baseball as well, as the NPB begins the playoffs, MLB heads into the AL/NL Championship Series, Netherlands' Hoofdklasse and the final relegation game will wrap up, and the Mexican Pacific League will run a full table of games. Cuban series takes a day off before beginning the next series of 3, and the Argentinian LMB will run a full day of games on Sunday with the hope that these will not be rained out.

Soccer wise, England absolutely crushed the island of San Marino. Again, if this is baseball, things'd be in the completely different direction, especially considering Great Britain isn't considered to be in the same tier as San Marino, who plays under Italy's leagues and came in second in the European Championship last month. Mexico seems to have held up well too, putting 2 in on Hondurus.

Venezuelan ball begins, Arizona Fall League, and Why Argentina.

There's a football game today, and I want to say that John Moe has absolutely ruined me on football. While it should be because of the comedian/public radio personality's poignant critique of current affairs in football (which he loves, I should point out) on his great sports podcast, Home Dunk.
The reason he's ruined it, that marvelous bastard, is that in preparation for the start of the NFL season, he took on The Tournament of Names, a competition of the team nicknames, literal Hawks verse literal Eagles, etc. So when I see the Colts-Texans games on the schedule for today, I can't help but think of a Texan man, likely with a gun drawn, engaging in a head on brawl with a young, brash horse.

My excitement today is in the true beginning to the winter league system. I mean, yeah, I'm excited about the Arizona games too, but this is one that I've looked on in previous years, and am happy to return to. I'll grant you, while my Spanish was probably better then, my ability to circumnavigate a website in another language was significationly poorer, and their website wasn't as nice as it is now. Also an added bonus is a co-worker whose family is ethnically Venezuelan, Colombian, and Brazilian, has talked about going to see the games and collecting the cards as a kid when they'd be down there for long periods (he's very much American). It looks like all their games are set to run at about 8:40pm ET, and I think there may be some league approved streams out there, so if you're interested, strap on your Google translate and figure out where your loyalty falls.

Arizona Fall League is funky considering I keep thinking "WHY ARE THESE GAMES STARTING SO LATE" and then I found out that apparently that Arizona does not recognize Daylight Savings Time. So yeah. Anyway, tonight, a couple of Marlins, Chad Wallach and John Bohn, are getting the start for Salt River. I'm excited about that.

You've probably noticed, if you've been paying attention to this space, that I've been putting up notes on the Argentinian  league. I recently researched the top 30 IBAF ranked teams, Argentina being one. Argentina's leagues seem to be pretty small, not many broadcasts, at least that I can find info about. Again, the language barrier hurts me. Likewise, I had been researching each country's leagues, I found that Panama's seemed to have been having problems. As it turns out, Panama has many leagues, which I found out by stumbling into the Spanish language wikipedia. So folks: if you know some more info about Panama or Argentina's baseball leagues, and would like to help me out a bit there, I would greatly appreciate it. In the meantime, I'll post what I can.

Around the World with Daily Games 10/8

If I don't absolutely lose my mind, I'd like to continue to do this. Year round, there are baseball leagues running on the professional level aside form the MLB and their Minor League affiliates. I probably will not be running anything on those since they are very well covered, one of the goals in doing this is making the information a little more available, and also in English where often it is not!

The Major means we're kind of a big deal

As I was looking over my list of upcoming games, on the State-side of things, we have new NBA and NHL games starting. Of course a number of those teams are Canadian as well, but you know what I mean. Regardless, those weren't the games on the schedule I'll be following. I know basketball is fairly big--have you seen their playoffs? It's hard to be excluded. The NHL, and hockey in general, is my favorite sport to not give a damn about. I mean this in the sense that I think it's a great sport. I've enjoyed going to hockey games in the past. But I don't follow it, don't have a team, don't think I will. My brother is a huge Bruins fan, and good on him. I have friends that are hockey followers, and honestly, I'd rather see their updates than football updates on Facebook. It's just not my thing, I guess. We'll always have the Mighty Ducks films, hockey.

So anyway, aside from baseball erryday, what could you possibly be excited about, right? Well, soccer. Soccer (or football, as it's called in the civilized world) is my favorite sport to follow aside from baseball. This is the first year I've really followed much beyond the World Cup, even though I've always intended to. Of the teams I've been following, it's been Everton in the EPL, Barcelona FC in La Liga, al-Ittihad (this is my wife's family's team out of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), and Houston Dynamo of the MLS.

The Dynamo are playing Toronto FC tonight at 7:30 PM ET, and this'll be the 3rd match between the two that I've been privvy to witness. The first time was kind of rough, I believe it started out well enough for the Dynamo, and then Toronto pulled ahead, the match ended 4-2? The next time they tied it up.The Dynamo made a push around the trading deadline, signing on DeMarcus Beasley and getting Luis Gurrido on loan from Olympia to help strengthen the midfield. Definitely the team has seem major improvement since then, and they're trying to sneak their way into the playoffs.

The other game running tonight is with the Portland Timbers and the San Jose Earthquakes. Portland could look to jump Vancouver with a win tonight, so it's important for them to excel over San Jose tonight.

This week begins another International break, which like the MLB, the MLS seems to not care about and just does whatever it wants. Notable that England will be taking on San Marino, which should be a clear win for England, unless it was their national baseball teams going up against each other, in which San Marino would be the clear winner, believe it or not.

The US has a game on Friday against Ecuador, which will be the grand return and departure of Landon Donovan to the US men's team. It's incidentally the only game broadcast on ESPN, as all others are for the Euro 2016, and are of no concern to us Unistadians.

Arizona Fall League-Day 1

1996 or 1997, I'm an avid baseball card collector. I don't remember the card set now, but I bought 3 packs of card, each came with a special card. One was for Livan Hernandez, before the World Series, before he was known. The other two were Arizona Fall League. I remember one being LaTroy Hawkins, which I think is great that he's still playing all things considered. The other guy, ehhhh I don't remember.

Anyway, it always threw me off. What was the Arizona Fall League? Tell me more baseball card! The card was silent, as cards tended to be back then before singing birthday cards. Back when the world was right.

Eventually I became aware of what it is, which is 6 teams, containing a number of representatives of each MLB team, the representatives being minor leaguers who are showing some potential or need a bit of additional rounding out. This year it really occurred to me to follow along, mostly concerning some players in the Marlins system, and thankfully the MLB has graced us with box scores and Gameday casts from their website, mlb.com.

The Miami Marlins, previous of Florida (still of Florida), has been my favorite team since pulling a baseball card (my entrance to baseball along with my parents' fanaticism for the postseason) of Jeff Conine in a Marlins uniform. The bright teal that turned so many children away pulled me in. I was excited, a new team! Here they were, they were mine, and it's been that way since, despite our various quarrels and the various front office fiascos and fire sales that have defined life as Marlins fans for so many.

ANYWAY. Back to Arizona.

So the first day seems to have been one of high scores, potentially with the mishmash of AA and AAA players, there is no doubt going to be some imbalance. My people are on the roster of the Salt River Rafters, which played against the Scottsdale Scorpions. The Scorpions posted up 7-4 today against Salt River. Two home runs were hit on the day, one from Greg Bird (NYY) for Scottsdale and the other from Peter O'Brien (ARI) with Salt River. And hey, one of my folks got a start, at 2B Austin Nola! Who went 2-4 with a run and a triple! Not too shabby, all things considered.

That was the last game of the day. Earlier in the day we saw two others, the Mesa Solar Sox at the Glendale Desert Dogs, and Peoria Javelinas at the Suprise Saguaros. Or well, if you were Arizona and at the games you saw it. If you're like me and live elsewhere in the country or you work, you sat around waiting for the games to end. The MLB is rather involved in this league, and there will be some games broadcast... in November on the MLB Network. So up til then? Nope.

Glendale ended up coming out 9-3 over the Solar Sox. Mesa took an early lead in the 2nd inning, but that was quickly dispelled and then overcome by Glendale with homers from Jason Esposito (BAL) and Nick Ramirez (MIL), as well as an impressive performance from Puerto Rican RF Steven Moya (DET) who went 3-5 with 3 RBI.

Meanwhile, the Peoria Javelinas (which have one of my favorite sport team names ever) edged out the Surprise Saguaros. The Saguaros had held onto the lead until the 8th with a solo shot from Patrick Kilvehan and runs spotted throughout the game, backing up 4 innings and 5 Ks from Taijuan Walker. Hunter Dozier (KAN) made the difference for Peoria with a 2 run double in to pull the Javelinas into the lead.

I feel like there has to be at least some private broadcast, radio, something of these games. It's amazing that there's not, and at the same time, the MLB does have that stranglehold on these kind of games. It is their league, I suppose. There'll be some experimentation with pace of game, so that'll be interesting to see how that goes.

Internationally speaking, because I love to talk about international baseball, most of the guys are hailing from the States, though there are a fair number of Dominican players that played today, a few Puerto Rican players, two representatives of Venezuela, and lone reps of Mexico, and Canada. I was little sad to see no European players, but then realized we'll probably see them later this month when the Australian Baseball League kicks off.

We're always playing baseball.
