11/19 World Baseball Scores

2014 Central American & Caribbean Games-Baseball

Panama 1-3 Mexico
Guatemala 2-4 Venezuela

We're into the placement rounds. Panama and Guatemala face off today to determine the last two places, while the top 4, Cuba (3-0), Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic (all 2-1) will face off to see who goes into the fight for bronze and the fight for gold. Tomorrow Venezuela face off against Mexico to determine the 5th and 6th places.

Liga de Beisbol Profesional Dominicano

Tigres del Licey 3-6 Gigantes del Cibao
Estrellas de Oriente 9-4 Leones del Escogido
Aguilas Ciaenas 1-2 Toros del Este

Yesterday morning, the Aguilas Cibaenas' stadium, Stadio Cibao caught fire. No one was hurt, and most of the damage was confined to offices, press boxes, and some of the VIP seating. Unfortunately this means some of the historic effects for the team were lost. Aguilas Cibaenas are one of the 4 primary teams of the original Dominican league, and the latter of the 4, have been established since 1937. The stadium had recently undergone some rennovation work for the Caribbean Series back in 2008. It is unlikely that this will interupt the currently playing schedule for Las Aguilas.

11/12 World Baseball Scores

MLB All-Stars/Samurai Japan Exhibition

MLB All-Stars 0-2 Samurai Japan

To clarify, some places are stating that it is the NPB All-Stars vs. MLB All-Stars. This is incorrect. The team the MLB All-Stars are playing is Samurai Japan, part of a special initiative to improve the Japanese national team that would compete in international play, such as the IBAF Premier 12 or the upcoming 2017 World Baseball Classic. These players are not just the best of the NPB, but also the best representation of Japanese baseball.

From Sweden, with Love (But mostly Baseball)

The other day, as I was looking over my stats for the blag, I noticed I had logged a few visitors from Sweden. "Baseball fans from Sweden?" I thought to myself. Then I also corrected myself. Of course baseball from Sweden. Baseball from everywhere, this is what your blag is about. So there you are.

In fact, the Swedish national team has ranked as high as 3rd in European competition, both in 1981 and in 1993, coming behind European baseball giants Netherlands and Italy. They've also ranked as high as 15th in the World Cup Baseball competition (in 1994), which in current IBAF rankings is where Australia sits, which is a much more familiar country to international baseball observers.

For Sweden, baseball is a club sport, and in general is more decentralized than we typically think of how a league operates. The club operate not only professional adult teams, but also more minor and little league level teams. It does not seem to be much of a spectator sport, as football (SOCCA) and ice hockey are much more prominent, followed by handball and floorball, which are things I am less familiar with outside of when I look up stuff about European sports.

The clubs play throughout the country, and the players sign up with the clubs they wish to play for. The highest level of professional play is in the Elitserien, composed of anywhere between 6-9 teams, of which the top teams participate in the Elitserien Cup Championship, held in the fall. The most recent champions were the Stockholm Monarchs, winning their 2nd straight championship, and their 6th title in the past 10 years.

I'm intrigued by the pictures I'm finding of the ballfields. They show a field surrounded by trees, which reminds me of the little leagues I'd play on when I was a kid. I couldn't say if this is just part of the Swedish aesthetic or mere consequence of the photos I found, but I like it iether way. HOpefully we can get another look at Sweden soon in either the world stage, or more within the the world of baseball in the Elitserien.

If any readers more familiar have any more inclusions or corrections, let me know, comment, contribute. My goal is to provide accurate information about baseball as it is being played ito the unaware English speaking audience thoughout the world, which in turn helps grow the games where it is smaller or lesser known.

I almost forgot, aside from just perusing wikipedia in English and Swedish, I also got some of my information from these two pages:

http://iof1.idrottonline.se/SvenskaBasebollochSoftbollForbundet/InEnglish/BaseballinSweden/
This is actually the main page for the Swedish Baseball & Softball Federation. They have some informative pages in English, like the one I listed, as well as club locations in the country!

21U World Baseball Cup-End of Round 1

Early this morning in Taiwan, the first round of the 21U World Baseball Cup came to a close. This is the last IBAF affiliated event before the first year of the Premier 12. Entering the championship, a couple of teams playing outside of the 12 had their eye on the potential 12th spot: Mexico (13th) and Australia (15th). I think it was probably safe to say as well, that most people were expecting strong performances from Korea and Chinese Taipei in Group A and Japan in Group B. The rest was up for grabs.

First of all, in Group B, Nicaragua has been playing with a fury that reminds us of a form they have not had in international play since the 90s. Secondly, teams that we would have expected to do well, like Netherlands, Mexico, and Venezuela, have been run over.

The first big surprise was New Zealand. After losing out the first game to Italy, New Zealand posted wins over Mexico and the Czech Republic before taking their second loss in the tournament to Chinese Taipei. Italy had taken a game against Mexico as well, but ended up losing to the Czech Republic 3-1 in game 4 and faced Chinese Taipei in game 5. Two parts of the next steps came completely as a surprise, at least to me.

First of all, New Zealand almost pulled it out. They almost overcame Korea, and they took the game lead into the 9th inning before Korea pulled off that last minute rally. It was that. close. Italy dropped 6-0 to Taipei, so no great surprise there. What did happen unexpectedly was the Czech Republic not only winning over Mexico 12-9, but they tied up with New Zealand and Italy and overcame their run difference to advance to the next stage.

So from Group A's teams being South Korea, Chinese Taipei, and the Czech Republic, and Group B being Japan, Nicaragua, and Australia.

The standings from the games inbetween these teams will stand to the next round, and likewise to the teams who did not advance, who will play in a consolation round.

So with these results, and with continued success, New Zealand (25), Czech Republic (26), and Nicaragua (28) should all see some major movement in their world rank. Likewise, Mexico may be looking at a drop. Australia has the potential to move in, and even with the current level of play Venezuela is unlikely to lose their spot. We'll keep looking as it all progresses, a few blogs (like Dutch Yankee Biscuit) have been covering the highlights better than I'm able, so I just wanted to post my thoughts on this in particular.

Now, aside from this I wanted to note that I will be doing some write-ups on baseball in a few countries we aren't covering scores from right now: Sweden, South Africa, Poland, and France. I had been seeing some people coming to the blog from a few of those countries (and welcome), so I thought, "What's baseball like in Sweden", and going from there. Watch this space!

Where do we stand: Week ending 11/9/2014

A couple of quick notes, the Argentinian league has been rained out the past couple of weeks so there hasn't been much to report on there. The Cuban league is taking a month-long break right now, presumably with the anticipation of the Central American & Caribbean Games in Veracruz which begin tomorrow.

It's Monday, Who's on first?

The Aussies and Puerto Rico joined us for the winter, so we're down to two leagues to start before the end of the year, the Colombian LCBP and the December only Liga Invernal Veracruz in Mexico. Unsure of the participation of the Panamanian leagues, but historically they run in the early part of the new year.

Wednesday Is For Hipsters

It's been a dark year for the football loving American hipster. Long has American football been their bane, the English Premier League their savior. But soccer-sorry, football, has gained immense popularity, to the point that the kits are now recognized in public, and no longer is this some thing that "you probably have never heard of."

What is the hipster to do? Frankly, they have to go deeper. Now one option is to get into some other European league, but generally that can get a bit tricky both in ability to watch and also the language barrier. Some hipster welcome such challenges.

For the American Hipster Football Fan (AHFF), it seems pretty clear to me: Sheffield Wednesday. I mean first of all, the name: Why Wednesday? They used to just be "The Wednesday" at that, so it's certainly a unique name for a team that typically plays on Saturdays and Sundays.

Now Sheffield Wednesday plays in the English League Championship, a level below the EPL, which is kinda like they're Indie, but they don't just outright suck (debateable, depending on who you're talking to). In fact, they're so Indie, they don't even broadcast the majority of their games on TV. They do radio broadcasts of the matches, and you have to be in Sheffield to actually listen to them. That's how Indie. And, they're a favorite of Jim McNulty from The Wire, properly known as Dominic West, originally of Sheffield. You kno you love The Wire. But let's go ahead and get to the real reason you want to support Sheffield Wednesday: their badge and nickname.

That's it right there. You see that? I know you do, and you're freaking out: it's an owl. Hipsters love owls, known fact. Look, you can sport an owl in an inconspicuous way, wearing a kit or an ironic collared shirt for a team that "you've probably never heard of." But you know who it is. The Owls! Sheffield Wednesday, your new team.
