Wednesday Is For Hipsters

It's been a dark year for the football loving American hipster. Long has American football been their bane, the English Premier League their savior. But soccer-sorry, football, has gained immense popularity, to the point that the kits are now recognized in public, and no longer is this some thing that "you probably have never heard of."

What is the hipster to do? Frankly, they have to go deeper. Now one option is to get into some other European league, but generally that can get a bit tricky both in ability to watch and also the language barrier. Some hipster welcome such challenges.

For the American Hipster Football Fan (AHFF), it seems pretty clear to me: Sheffield Wednesday. I mean first of all, the name: Why Wednesday? They used to just be "The Wednesday" at that, so it's certainly a unique name for a team that typically plays on Saturdays and Sundays.

Now Sheffield Wednesday plays in the English League Championship, a level below the EPL, which is kinda like they're Indie, but they don't just outright suck (debateable, depending on who you're talking to). In fact, they're so Indie, they don't even broadcast the majority of their games on TV. They do radio broadcasts of the matches, and you have to be in Sheffield to actually listen to them. That's how Indie. And, they're a favorite of Jim McNulty from The Wire, properly known as Dominic West, originally of Sheffield. You kno you love The Wire. But let's go ahead and get to the real reason you want to support Sheffield Wednesday: their badge and nickname.

That's it right there. You see that? I know you do, and you're freaking out: it's an owl. Hipsters love owls, known fact. Look, you can sport an owl in an inconspicuous way, wearing a kit or an ironic collared shirt for a team that "you've probably never heard of." But you know who it is. The Owls! Sheffield Wednesday, your new team.
